Bringing Your Offline Store Online: 3 Key Areas To Focus On

For many owners of offline, brick and mortar stores, the decision to take their store online is undeniably tempting. We live in a world where e-commerce is fast becoming the norm, so it seems natural the next step is to bolster your overall sales by offering your products online.

If you have decided you want to explore the online world, there are three key factors you’ll need to consider before making the switch.

Website design and usability

It’s possible to start to sell online via third-party websites such as Amazon, but doing so tends to mean surrendering a portion of your profits in fees. As a result, it is usually preferable to create your own website.

It’s important to note while the idea of starting your own site may send a shiver down your spine, either due to concerns over costs or inexperience, content management systems such as WordPress have DIY sites that are fairly simple to create. There are also plenty of free guides online that can help with WordPress setup, management, and overall design. With a little experimentation, you could have your site online in no time.

Payment process

Accepting online payments requires a focus on two particular areas – options and compliance.  You need to choose which payment methods you wish to accept. There are countless choices available, ranging from standard credit cards to new technology such as Bitcoin. It’s usually best to start small, focusing on the most common payment options, and build from there. You will also need to learn about the importance of WordPress PCI Compliance. You have to be in compliance with all the regulations designed to protect card users when shopping online.

Shipping

Arguably the most significant difference between online and offline retail is how customers receive their items. As an offline retailer, how items reach your customers hasn’t been a concern for you. Your customers come to the store to buy things and take them home. However, by moving online, you’ll now be responsible for shipping your customers’ purchase to them.

You will need to think about the packaging, especially if you sell delicate items. It’s helpful to perform a few trial runs, sending the parcels to your home, or a friend, to test the packaging before selling to customers. Also, you ’ll need to consider what you will charge for shipping. There’s no “right” or “wrong” decision here.  You may start off with discounted or free shipping rates. Offering free shipping can be hugely beneficial if you can make the numbers work.

Whether you choose to move your retail efforts entirely online or are hoping to supplement your offline income with an accompanying online store, considering all of the above factors should help your new endeavor be as successful as possible. Here’s to YOUR success!
