The word talent is spread around in the business world like it’s the word ‘the’.  When too many people keep using a word without really meaning it, its impact begins to slowly fade. If you hear someone’s talented you can easily shrug it off even though that person might actually be truly talented. Every boss that has ever had a unique individual work for them that they can call talented will know what the difference when it’s just a statement and when it’s really true.

So then, what the heck is a “Talented” Employee?

A talented employee is someone willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. They are full of drive and ambition but they are also a team player.  They spend time researching and learning about their industry to improve themselves.  A talented employee will put into practice what they learn without being told to. They will come up with ideas, think outside the box and offer different solutions to problems.

They get the big picture

Great minds think alike and therefore birds of a feather flock together. As the business owner, you have things on your mind that your employees often cannot comprehend. You are concerned about things like how a marketing campaign will look to customers in other countries without having to make major adjustments to local campaigns. You could also need to solve different issues at once while keeping the overall strategic plan in mind.

When an employee begins to show signs they understanding these things, they can be deemed as a prospect talent. For example, they don’t just bring ideas to you like most employees.  They also present information on the logistics, costs, or resources needed. In meetings, they will ask questions that take the ideas one step further getting to the answers to the how and when. They will be able to not only see the idea but the big picture and how it all connects together.
