This Holiday Season, Advance Your Career with Twitter

When it comes to work, during the last few weeks of the year, many people don’t think about how they can advance their career.  You may not think about it, but it’s the perfect time to do a few of the small things that can add up and make a big impact.  One of the things you should think about is social media. Twitter is a great place to start.

If you have ever listened to one of my podcasts, then you already know Twitter is my favorite social media platform.  I love it so much I was asked to quietly manage a few accounts.  You can find a lot of information on Twitter. There lots of blog articles, entertainment news, reviews of the latest hot items, and inspirational quotes and messages. You’ll find great lessons and knowledge shared from influencers in every industry from across the globe.  But, can spending time on Twitter really help your career?  Here are three ways you can take advantage of what Twitter has to offer.

Follow an Influencer.

This holiday season select one influencer in your industry or career field that you will follow.  See what type of information they’re sharing and what their viewpoint is on the subject.  Reading and listening to their ideas can help to shape your viewpoint on an issue relevant to your organization. It can also lead you to additional resources that can be beneficial.  Even after the holidays, check in periodically to see what they are tweeting about.  Comment, like and share and they will possibly comment back.

Share What You Learn.

Search on a topic key to your industry. Find a tweet that interests you and read it. Share the information you learned with a colleague or friend and ask their opinion of it.  You have worthwhile, current and trending information to share which not only gets you thinking but others in the organization as well. You can help to stimulate new ideas or a new way of thinking.  Co-workers may be inspired to create something that increases the productivity and efficiency of the workplace. That’s a win for everybody!

Like, Comment and Share.

Most people think to position yourself as an expert on Twitter, you just have to post your own Tweets and lots of them True, you want to tweet great content but what can really take you to the next level is liking, sharing and commenting on the Tweets of others.  You engage in a conversation, sharing your original viewpoint and people will take notice.

Just three simple steps can help you advance your career by increasing your engagement on Twitter. If you are thinking, this is going to take a lot of time – it won’t! You can do this in as little as five to ten minutes a day.  Think about it.  Is the five-ten minutes a day you would spend worth it if it can put you in a better position to get noticed and get the promotion or job you want?
