Thousands of new graduates are entering the workforce this summer. Graduation and the months to follow can be exciting but also very stressful. This is especially true if you’re not entirely sure what you want to do yet. Doubt about your degree and being uncertain about your first big career move is something that has plagued many graduates before you, so try not to fret. You might have decided you’re not quite ready for the 9-5 office life and want to travel the world. Well, the good news is that option doesn’t have to be a distant dream. I’ve outlined a list of some of the most popular jobs that allow you to travel the world while you earn. So take a look and see how you can go about landing a job that lets you travel the world.
Administration
Believe it or not, being a professional Executive or Personal Assistant can have you globetrotting the world with your company. Many large companies have outposts in a variety of countries. If your CEO is going to the Bahamas, Rome, or even Toronto, you get to go with them too! While you may not walk straight into such a role, administrative positions can be a great entry-level job with many different pathways. Those with degrees in social sciences, communications, human resources, or business may find this to be a great career choice. You can even showcase your wide variety of skills, such as writing and public speaking, while in this role.
Sales
Ask any highflying sales manager, and they will tell you they almost live in a suitcase. Sales positions are not just limited to going out and selling a product. It can involve account management, researching new products, and traveling to understand your customer’s needs. An extroverted, confident graduate from the business field would be the ideal ‘people’s person’ for such a sociable career. From traveling to meet potential buyers and suppliers to checking out prime retail space, you can find yourself frequently visiting new and exotic places.
Veterinarian and Pet Jobs
When most people think of careers working with animals, the main job they think of is a veterinarian. However, there are so many different careers in the pet industry. There are Vet Technicians, Nurses, and even positions for Emergency Veterinarians. The second thing that comes to mind is the potential for limited opportunities. The good news is, once you graduate, or even if you are a seasoned Veterinarian, you can still travel the world and do what you love. Vet & Pet Jobs Marketplace is the perfect place to start your search. They assist you with finding veterinary jobs across the United States, Canada, Asia, Europe, and other exciting places.
Education
Teaching is one career that can take you around the world. Helping children and young people to accomplish their goals, especially where education is limited, can be a hugely rewarding experience. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is very popular with grads from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia. You can spend time living in a foreign country gaining valuable career experience. If that’s not quite what you’re looking for, consider becoming an au pair. An au pair lives in a foreign country, assisting with housework, chores, and childcare in exchange for room and board and often a small salary. That’s a great way to save on accommodation and get to live in a new country.
Law Enforcement
If you’re considering a career in law enforcement, it’s worth noting that many countries worldwide are looking for law enforcement officers. Often, there are programs where you can spend time working in a foreign country to assist them or find ways to improve processes in your home country. Criminal Justice or Pre-Law graduates can find this to be an exciting career choice as they experience crime and justice from a whole different view.
Social Media
Working in social media means you don’t always need to head into the office every day. With more people considering the digital nomad lifestyle, working on your clients’ social channels on a beach in Bali might not be as distant a dream as you think. There are even companies that are dedicated to making your remote working dreams a reality. It’s a fast-paced and creative role that those graduating in Media, Communications, or Advertising may find appealing to them.
Finance
Money rules everything. So that’s why hundreds of national banks have branches elsewhere. If you’re a natural number cruncher with a spirit to travel, getting a job in an international bank could be just right for you. The role of a Financial Analyst can be stressful, but you’ll learn skills that will make you very marketable. With a degree in accounting or economics, you have the necessary management and analysis skills to get started. Need to brush up on your skills? New England College offers accounting courses to help you ace your interview with confidence.
Retail
This one isn’t just for the fashionistas. A career in the retail sector doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be working on a shop floor stacking shelves or hanging clothes. As in the finance industry, many multinational stores offer graduate programs that are respected in the industry. If a managerial role isn’t for you, there are also careers in buying, merchandising, and store planning. All of these jobs could have you visiting places you never thought you would see.
Engineering and Industrial
A highly lucrative role with massive options for career progression, this one is ideal for science grads. Across the globe, there is a very high demand for the right talent to fill these roles. Many companies are willing to hire individuals from other countries. Many of them offer excellent starting salaries and generous relocation packages as even more of an incentive.
Information Technology
IT, or Information Technology, is a popular sector with graduates from all backgrounds. It encompasses computer-related activities from programming, web development, information security, and software design. Huge companies such as Microsoft and IBM offer graduate programs, but there are also many opportunities within smaller companies.
Oil and energy
The oil and energy sector is another industry suffering from a massive skills shortage. The industry relies on scientists, engineers, and geophysicists, so it’s a sector overflowing with graduate opportunities. There are many companies you can consider, such as Exxon or Chevron. Rigzone is a great website to look for oil and gas jobs and stay up to date on the latest news and training. With so many possibilities, it’s a brilliant way to work and live overseas. Although it’s not considered a glamorous and slick role, working in oil can be lucrative, and progression is notoriously quick.
Media
If a media career is what you’re after, news, television, and radio stations are always looking for skilled individuals to jump on board. As expected, this industry can be cut-throat and fast-paced, but it could be just the ticket for the right ambitious person. And of course working in sectors such as television, film or even radio means you’ll more than likely get a chance to visit new far-flung places.
If you have thought about traveling the world but thought it was an impossible dream, it doesn’t have to be. You have spent years earning your degree; now put the skills to good use as you make your dreams come true. Here’s to YOUR success!
