Six Things To Do When Hiring Your First Employee

When you’re working around the clock to keep your business afloat, you know it’s time to hire help. Although most entrepreneurs launch their startups as a one-man or one-woman show, very few can say they remained that way for long.  Whether choosing to outsource tasks, or hiring your first employee, this is a huge milestone for your business. Not only does it mean taking on new responsibilities yourself, but it also means being able to delegate tasks to someone else.  When hiring your first employee, you need to find someone who fits and embodies your company culture.  Here are six things you must consider.

Know What You Need

Before you advertise a position in your business, you have to consider exactly what sort of help you require. If you only need support for a short time, then outsourcing may be a more appropriate solution. When an in-house team member is necessary, you must define the position clearly. Be specific about what your needs are by listing the responsibilities of the role.

Advertise The Position Online

Potential candidates won’t know you have an open position unless you advertise it. While local newspapers used to be the best place for this, most job seekers these days look for work online. Because of this, you should write listings for a few different job sites. Most of these are free to use, but you can usually pay to place higher in search results. You can also use social media to advertise the position. LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook are all great places to share links to your job posting.

Prepare For The Interview

You wouldn’t want a candidate walking into an interview unprepared, so make sure you don’t either. You only get a short time with each individual, which means you have to make the most of it. To do this, you should write down a list of questions you will ask and the topics you will cover. You might also want to conduct research and learn a little about the interviewees. Many employers now use Google to search for a candidates name to see what comes up. You might just be surprised at what you find. However, if you do find negative or controversial information, give the candidate a chance to discuss what you saw. The information may not be valid.

Set Up Your Payroll

Paying employees on time is crucial, as is properly calculating payroll taxes. To ensure you do this smoothly, you should set up a payroll and benefits service such as Alliance located in American Fork, Utah. They have assisted hundreds of Utah businesses by offering dependable services at a great price. There are many different products out there, all of which can make payroll much more manageable. Rather than attempt to handle the task by yourself, you should look for the right solution for the needs of your business.

Deal With The Legalities

Becoming an employer is so much more complicated than giving someone a job and paying them for it each month. You must also ensure that you have all of your legal ducks in a row or it could come back to bite you later. Insurance must be bought, safety checks must be carried out, and contracts must be signed. This can get confusing, which is why you should have legal help.

Remember To Check References

Employers ask interviewees for references for a reason. While most don’t, some candidates lie on their application forms and during interviews. If you don’t check references, you may never know about these lies. As a result, you could hire someone that isn’t right for your company. The hiring process can be lengthy and costly at the best of times, so always be sensible and follow up.

Hiring an employee, especially your first employee, is a big step for your business. Do your homework to make sure you find the right people to be a part of your team.  These tips can help to get you started in the right direction. Here’s to YOUR success!
