Are you thinking about making a career change? Many reasons can motivate you to want to. Your career may be something you just fell into. If you’re honest with yourself, you really don’t love your job. Is now the time for a career change? Do you feel empowered enough to make those changes? If you are ready to make changes in your career, here are a few tips to help you get started.
Decide what you really want to do
One of the first things you need to do is think about what you really want to do. Maybe, now that you have some work experience behind you, you’ve realized you have a passion for something different. Or perhaps you’re skilled in a particular area and feel now is the time to explore jobs in that field. Whatever it is, it’s worth thinking about it to ensure you take the necessary steps to make it your reality.
Look at how to make the changes
Once you have identified what you really want to do, you can start looking at how to make it happen. Take time to assess where you are right now and determine what you need to do to get there. You may find you have all the skills required and can begin to actively seek out new roles. You may find you’re missing some skills and need to take a few courses to become qualified. For example, some job roles like nursing require specific qualifications, and functions in social care would require you to consider something like an FSU social work program. Do the proper research to ensure you possess or can acquire the necessary skill sets.
Build and update your resume
The next thing to think about would be your resume and how you can make it specific to the new career you want. You will need to tailor your resume so your recent experience reflects the requirements of the position you are seeking. Don’t forget to include any new qualifications and certificates that you have received. Consider working with a Career Coach or Counselor, such as myself, to write or review your resume. We can often provide recommendations that can help your resume stand out from the crowd.
Be proactive and approach people for jobs
In many cases, the jobs you want may not be advertised. Or when they are, they may be advertised for only a short time as they are in demand. Make sure you are being proactive and seeking out jobs, even approaching potential employers to let them know of your availability. Often hiring manages can keep your information on file to consider you when vacancies arise.
Have faith in your ability
Finally, you need to have faith in your ability to make this change. It can be challenging to make changes to your life, but if you genuinely feel a career change will positively impact you, go for it. You will find your desire to seek out something new as well as the inspiration for the new year may be just the motivation you need.
Let’s hope these tips have you making the career change YOU want to make this year. It’s all about Success on YOUR own terms!
