I’ve haven’t been as creative as I would like to be lately. To help boost my mood, I decided to make a few changes with my workspace. Whether you’re working in a cramped cubicle or out of a room in your home, you know space comes at a premium. Maximizing every inch of available space should be a priority.
In a previous post, I mentioned how important it is to have an uncluttered workspace to prevent distractions and to make full use of the available space. It’s easy to fill your space with stuff – some stuff you need and some stuff you don’t. But having so much “stuff” around you can prevent you from getting your work done. Not getting your work done can cost you time and money.
Ready to maximize your workspace? Here are a few ideas for you to consider to unclutter and organize your workspace.
Combine Your Technology
If you have a separate scanner, small copier, and printer, you really need to consider replacing them. In a post by Hewlett Packard (HP) In a post by Hewlett Packard (HP) on digital printing technology, it suggests replacing space-hogging legacy devices with multifunctional printers or MFP. When you’re strapped for space, you’ll appreciate the square footage you can save by replacing multiple office devices with a single multifunction unit. The Balance SMB explains that MFPs can save valuable space, reduce energy costs, and improve productivity by integrating all office duties into a single device. Depending on your printing needs, you will need to do your research as to what type of digital printing press technology will best fit your needs. These days most digital printing devices will also copy, scan, and even fax documents, all from a single unit. HP offers some great cost-effective options for you to consider.
Maximize Light
Many people know natural lighting has been scientifically proven to boost your satisfaction and productivity levels. What you may not know is that it can also make your space look bigger. Entrepreneur and CEO of ‘Insightfully’, Chirag Kulkarni told Inc. changes in lighting can dramatically affect the appearance of a small office. Dark colors can make rooms appear smaller and more cluttered. Choosing a lighter tone for your office décor and furniture can help reflect more light and make it appear more spacious. If there isn’t a window in the small space you’re using, invest in overhead down-lighting like a track with LED lights to illuminate your space.
Think Vertically
Regardless of the square footage you’re working with, don’t forget about the vertical space that often remains unused. Consider using floating shelving or even hang large pockets to hold files and other paperwork. You can also take ideas from Swedish home and office designs which makes use of hooks to hang items. This allows you to hang your sweater or coat instead of using a floor-standing coat rack which takes up more space. Also, when you’re considering the type of desk best suited for your workspace, invest in one that is narrower and has vertical shelving. This can be especially useful if you’re living in a rental apartment where drilling into the walls isn’t always ideal.
Organize Electrical and Data Cables
When you think about decluttering your workspace, rarely do you think about the electrical cords and cables. Everything from power cables, to your keyboard, mouse, and phone cords are not only distracting but also a safety hazard. This is why the CEO and owner of Colorado-based Design Studio Interior Solutions, Judy Goldman suggests wrapping cords that are too long or using cord clips to keep them together. Binder clips and Velcro straps are also handy to keep cables together and out of the way. Think of going wireless for your mouse and keyboard, which will eliminate two cords outright.
These are just a few strategies you can use to begin to maximize your workspace. Making just a few changes can increase your productivity and also boost your mood. Here’s to YOUR success!
