The holiday season is almost upon us. Stores have already started setting up their holiday displays, some people have even put out a few holiday decorations. It is also a time where some people and companies slow down and take a break. Many hiring freezes occur during this time. For a job seeker, this can be a very demotivating, maybe even depressing time. If you develop a strategic proactive plan, you can take advantage of the opportunities that come with the holiday season. Here are a few things you need to consider.
Keep or start networking. Networking is still the best way to meet people and to get the job you desire. Attend the holiday parties of the associations you belong to. Accept party invitations from friends and family. You may meet someone who has the exact connection you are looking for. At events, don’t stand in the corner by yourself. Meet new people and learn about what they do, Follow up asking how can you help them.
Volunteer. Volunteer work is another way to meet new people and try out new experiences. During this time of the year there are a lot of fundraisers and charity events you can attend. There are also many organizations providing assistance to no income/low income families. Volunteer to serve meals, collect donations or host a winter coat drive.
Reconnect. Send out cards and make some phone calls. Even though you may not have spoken with someone in awhile, still reach out to them. Sending holiday wishes provides a reason to get back in touch with someone without appearing to just be asking about job prospects.
Take a temporary position. Many companies hire temporary help this time of year. It could be a great way to pick up some extra cash and expand your skills. Don’t take the position lightly, exceed expectations and you can be moved to a permanent position or they may be able to refer you to a permanent position.
Holiday Schedules. People like to take time off or temporarily change their schedule during the holiday season. If you don’t get a return phone call or an answer to an email right away be patient. Give it a few extra days and don’t panic.
Looking for a job during the holiday season can be frustrating but not impossible. You have to continue taking action and not loose your momentum. These are just a few things to consider during the process. If you find yourself feeling stuck, consider working with a career coach or career counselor to help you stay focused and on track.
