Handling Pressure At Work

With the need to meet end of year goals and deadlines, pressure is heating up in many organizations.   Maybe you’re in a career field that’s very demanding and the pressure seems to always be on.  Being able to handle pressure, is a valued skill that most employers look for especially when it comes to opportunities to advance. If you have been holding off on going for a promotion because of the stress or you are feeling overwhelmed with all the pressure around you, don’t worry.

You can learn simple techniques and strategies that business leaders like Monty Cerf use to reduce the pressure and show those around you got this.  Here are a few you can try today.

Stay calm.  Don’t let what is being said or done trigger you to respond in a loud, aggressive manner.  By staying calm, people will see you can maintain a level head and not overreact.  Also, your being calm will encourage those you are interacting with to pause, calm down and regain focus.

Stay focused on the task.  It’s easy to become distracted by what’s going on around you. You must stay focused on the projects you are responsible for.  You still have an assignment to complete and you can’t lose sight of that.

Avoid the drama. You may want to know what’s going on around the office, but you can easily get sucked into all the drama.  Next thing you know, the day is winding down and you have yet to complete the task that was assigned to you. Know when to walk away from conversations that are not adding value to your work or career.

Stay positive.  Refuse to allow other’s negative words or actions affect you.   When difficult situations arise, look for the opportunities.  Do not become discouraged. Stay focused and find the solution.

Take A Break.  If you find yourself feeling extremely overwhelmed, pull yourself away, if just for a few minutes.  Stepping away allows you time to refresh.  Take a walk around the building or even step outside for some fresh air.  You will find you are able to more productive, with new ideas after your break.

Take Vacations.  So many people let their vacation days go to waste by never taking a vacation or only using vacation days to run errands.  You need to refuel your mind, body, and spirit and a great vacation can do just that.  Try to take it when things are slow at the office.  When you return you’ll be ready to deal with the pressures of work.

Get help when you need it.  This is probably the most difficult one of all.  So many people don’t like to ask for help.  At some point, you will need it. You don’t have to know everything.  They key is to know where to go to get to the information or what you need

Remember someone is always watching you, be it your peers or your supervisor. Avoiding drama, staying positive and focused will show you have what it takes to handle pressure at work. Practicing these strategies will give you an advantage when it comes time for a promotion on when transitioning to a new position.  If you want more tips and strategies or would like to design a plan uniquely tailored for you, send me an email at cowens@infinitycoaching.net.
