One of my goals this year was to focus on my health. Not necessarily to lose weight, although I wouldn’t mind shedding a few pounds, but to transition to a healthier lifestyle. Out of all my goals this year, this is the one that has received the least attention. Well, it’ not too late so where shall I begin – with water.
I started watching a few videos and there is one constant theme that seemed to pop up for me. It was there in front of me even when I wasn’t looking for it. I kept hearing – drink more water. Okay, drink more water. I hate to drink water. Why should I? I had to come up with why I should be drinking half my body weight in water.
All the fitness and nutrition buffs will tell you, “It’s good for your health” and “You need it to cleanse and detoxify your body”. Okay, I get that. I hear that all the time. But that isn’t enough to get me to drink all that water.
Not drinking enough water can dehydrate you. Let’s take this one a little further. Dehydration can lead to exhaustion and fatigue. Hmm, if you are tired you don’t want to get up and get your work done or hang out with friends.
Your brain is made up of about 75 percent water. If you are dehydrated, your brain can slow down a bit leading to some mental challenges. Your focus is not the same. Maybe someone has said, you seem a little irrational lately. So not drinking water leads to dehydration, which can lead to a lack of focus. As a business owner, I need to maintain focus to reach my goals.
Dehydration can also lead to depression. You may have difficulty sleeping and feel somewhat stressed and overwhelmed. Okay. So, not drinking water can lead to dehydration which can lead to depression, lack of sleep, stress and overwhelm. I have to pause to go drink some water. Be right back…
Okay, I’m back. Now let’s put this all together.
When you experience high levels of stress, you’re not getting enough sleep or you’re not able to focus clearly, your work performance and productivity can decline. You may begin to forget things or find yourself becoming easily distracted. Your concentration just isn’t the same. So, if I am doing pretty good with my business, if I drink water, I am going to become more productive and focused? Interesting…
I thought I was doing really well with my business, but as I thought about how drinking water can affect you, I wondered, could drinking more water improve my overall performance and leadership? As a Career Strategist, Executive and Leadership Coach I find this quite intriguing. Is this a key that can help me take things to the next level? So, let’s find out what can happen.
Over the next three months, I’m going to increase the amount of water I drink and see if there is a difference in how I do things. Will I really become more productive? Will I start writing the next book I have been thinking about? How will I begin this curious, fun experiment…?
First thing every morning I’ll drink 16 ounces of water. During the first 30 days, I’ll drink at least an additional 48 ounces. Every 30 days I’ll increase the amount. Oh, and it has to be water. Green tea doesn’t count.
I’ll be sure to report back to you after the first 30 days to let you know how things are going. If you are wanting to give it a try too, send me an email at cowens@infinitycoaching.net and we can track our progress together. I just committed to drinking all that water?!! I’ll start tomorrow, I promise.
Stay tuned for an update in 30 days in the meantime enjoy the upcoming posts on life and leadership.
