If you are looking for a new job, considering a career transition, or working to get a promotion, you need to implement a strategy that allows you to get noticed and stand out from crowd. One of the ways to do that is by starting a blog. In the article, How Blogging Can Advance You Career, I outlined the benefits of blogging and things to consider before you get started. Once you have clearly identified the purpose of the blog, have selected the platform, and have the basic set up ready to go, you want to implement a strategy to draw readers to your blog and keep them coming back. Here are some ideas to incorporate into your plan to show off your talent and skills.
Not too short, not too long. When writing your blog posts, consider keeping them to 300 – 700 words. You want to keep the attention span of the reader and you want them to come back for more. If you have a large amount of content to share, consider writing a series of posts. You can tell from the title, this article you are reading is a part of a series.
Be consistent. Two of the main reasons readers stop coming back or unsubscribe from your blog, you don’t post enough or you post too much. Post fresh content by posting on your blog at least once a week. Unless there is a special event, challenge, or topic you are focused on such as National Blog Posting Month in November, try not to post more then twice a week.. Posting more then that can cause the reader to become overwhelmed with content. You really want to be mindful of the frequency if you send your blog out via email.
The idea notebook. You never know when an idea will come to you so keep a small notebook with you or use the notepad on your smart phone to capture thoughts and ideas when they come up. Create a folder on your computer where you save drafts and notes.
Grow your network. You can use your blog site to network and meet new people through techniques like guest blogging, interviews, and exchanging links. Once you established these networks, you want to cultivate the relationship. It often takes a job seeker six months or longer to find a job and a blog allows the job seeker to stay in touch and relevant during this time. Continue to add value and allow others to see you as an expert in your industry. You never know who your readers may know and can introduce you to.
Keep them coming back. If people respond and comment on your post, acknowledge them. Thank them for their comments and answer all their questions. Direct them to other articles you have written about the topics that interest them.
Politely Engage. Take a stance on key issues and trending topics but use facts to support your claims. Write about a pending legislation that can impact your industry that is receiving media attention. Join groups on social media that discuss topics related to your blog; there are thousands of groups out there especially on LinkedIn and Facebook. Some groups will even allow you to share your articles to stimulate discussions in the group. Key influencers, leaders and recruiters often hang out in these groups and will take note of your contributions. You can also search out people who you want to meet and offer them helpful information. Always communicate in a polite manner and do not argue with anyone when their opinion differs from yours, even if they try to encourage you to do so.
The portfolio. Your blog is an opportunity to showcase your talent. If the content of the blog is relevant to position your are applying for, include a link to your blog on your cover letter or resume. Potential employers can get to know you through the posts you create. You can repurpose your content and turn the posts in to YouTube videos, a book or eBook. You may even earn income from the eBooks or books you create.
In today’s competitive job market, you have to consider various ways to help you stand out from the crowd and get noticed. You can show off your skills and talents, network and position yourself as an expert by having a good, strong blog. Be sure to share your posts across your social media platforms and don’t forget to share your blog with friends and family. With the high quality content you will provide, senior managers, influencers, recruiters and other readers will find your blog using search engines and see you as the expert you are.
