Every business owner has the responsibility to keep themselves and their employees safe at all times. It is incredibly important for anyone working in your business to know how to keep themselves safe and their data secure. In a recent article, Protecting Your Business In Everyway Possible, I shared a few things for you to think about when it comes to protecting your business. Today I want to continue the conversation as I discuss some additional security tips you need to know. These tips are especially applicable if you work in a business location or office.

Create password protected items

When it comes to threats to security in the workplace, it’s important to remember a threat can come from anywhere. A threat can even come from inside. Although your employees are most likely trustworthy, it’s important you always take time to think about what could happen if they weren’t.  If you have documents that are highly sensitive in nature you may want to password protect them. This will ensure only those who need to know have access to the documents.

Get cybersecurity

Cybercrime continues to rise.  Every single day there is a new hack or issue which goes on somewhere in the world.  We tend to overlook how much data we actually have out there. Data can be anything from bank account details to addresses and criminals will try to access this data for their own personal gain. The best thing you can do is invest in top-rated security. North American Health Security Company (NAHS), provides Healthcare IT  that is unique to the healthcare industry. The specialists there proactively identify, respond to, and remediate attacks and breaches before they occur. You will want to find a similar company that focuses on your industry.

Get geese

No, this is not a joke. Geese have been used as guards for centuries. Some even say they are better than actual guard dogs.  Why?  For starters, geese are naturally territorial, have better eyesight then both humans and dogs and cost hardly anything to train. If you have your own office building which you have bought, there will always be a bigger responsibility for you to keep the building safe.  Because they are easy to keep, you can use them to keep your office building safe throughout the year. They are a quick, simple addition you can make to your “staff” that can have a big impact on the business. Plus, you’ll have your own personal company mascots!

Install cameras and lights

One of the main things you can do as a business to keep those who enter your building safe is to install cameras and lights around the outside of the building. They will serve as a deterrent for anyone who is thinking about robbing the place. Seeing cameras and motion sensing lights outside a building means there is a higher likelihood of being identified and charged with the crime. Therefore they will be much less likely to try and do anything.

Lock the computers

Make sure when you are trying to keep your business secure and safe you always think about locking the computers. We store so much personal data on our devices, we don’t want to give others free open free access to it. Visitors can come into your office space at any time to do repairs or visit a colleague. Let’s not tempt them by leaving the screen wide open for them to view. Be very careful with what you do and always lock up your machine when you leave the room.

These tips may seem like small things, but one small error could very, very costly. See which ones you can implement in your business today and share them with your team so they are informed of ways they can stay safe. Oh and next time you see geese sitting in front of a building, remember they may not just be hanging out but working to protect their territory.  Here’s to YOUR success!
